Village Forest Management

Agasco is currently collaborating with local NGOs and village forest communities to design and implement reforestation and peatland protection projects.

Project Intervention

Extensive land occupation, illegal logging, forest fires and the expansion of acacia, palm and rubber plantations have resulted in high deforestation and peat drainage rates in Indonesia. The high carbon stocks in peat and rapid deforestation lead to considerable greenhouse gas emissions and will continue if effective management is not implemented. 

Our team works with village forests to prevent illegal logging and forest fires, block peat draining canals, and increase forest community welfare.

Impacts & benefits

Community-led Design

Successful implementation relies on the full and effective involvement of local communities in developing village forest restoration and protection activities. Therefore, it’s necessary to ensure governing committees have the capacity, resources, and support from local and national authorities required to play a leading role in project development.
